Kundalini Explained: From Ancient Energy to Modern Practice

Kundalini -> Kundalini Yoga -> Quundalini & Quantum Healing

Before we can talk about Kundalini Yoga or Quundalini, we first have to understand Kundalini itself. Because Kundalini, in and of itself, is not a yoga practice.

Kundalini is the energy.

It is the innate life force that lives within every human being. The intelligence that animates life. It is connected to our vitality, creativity, intuition, awareness, desire, passion, purpose, and our natural impulse to grow and become.

You could call it life force. You could call it Shakti. You could call it the animating intelligence within the body. I often think of it simply as the energy of becoming.

In the yogic tradition, Kundalini is often symbolized as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine; a dormant potential waiting to awaken. But I don't necessarily think of dormant as meaning that Kundalini is completely asleep until one day we suddenly “activate” it. If you are alive, life force is already moving through you.

The deeper question is: How much access do you have to it? How freely is that energy able to move? How much of your creativity, vitality, intuition and consciousness are available to you? And how much of that natural current has become restricted beneath fear, conditioning, trauma, old patterns, protective responses and all of the other things we accumulate simply through the experience of being human?

That brings us to Kundalini Yoga.

Kundalini Yoga is a way of working with the Kundalini energy.

Kundalini Yoga is a body of practices designed to cultivate a relationship with that inner current.

It combines practices such as rhythmic movement, breath-work, mantra, meditation, mudra, focused awareness and eye gaze. Rather than working only with the physical body, these practices intentionally bring our awareness toward the more subtle aspects of our experience - our breath, attention, intention, sensation, energy, thought patterns and consciousness.

The roots of Kundalini Yoga reach deep into India's ancient spiritual and yogic traditions. From the early wisdom of the Upanishads to the teachings of Tantra, the Nath yogis, and the development of Hatha Yoga, we find an evolving understanding of breath, life force, consciousness, and the awakening of human potential.

These teachings were explored, refined, and passed down through generations of yogis, sages, and spiritual practitioners. Over time, these ancient philosophies and practices informed the development of various approaches to Kundalini Yoga, with different teachers and traditions bringing their own methods of organizing and transmitting the teachings. Rather than emerging from one individual or a single, unbroken lineage, Kundalini Yoga as we know it today reflects centuries of spiritual inquiry, practice, and evolution.

Kundalini Yogis are interested in what happens when we stop experiencing the body as merely physical and begin working with the currents moving through it. This is where my fascination with Kundalini Yoga began - not with what the body could do, but with what it could awaken.

From my first class, Kundalini Yoga felt different to me. We may be moving the spine, pumping the navel, holding the arms in a particular position, breathing rhythmically, chanting a mantra or focusing the eyes - but the physical action isn't necessarily the destination.

The physical practice is the doorway. Through the body, we begin to access something subtler. And through the subtle, we begin to cultivate a relationship with Kundalini, the energy of creation.

So what is Quundalini with a Q?

Jai Quundalini™ is my evolution of Kundalini-based practice. It grew out of years of practicing, studying, teaching, questioning and experiencing these teachings for myself.

It doesn't reject Kundalini Yoga. It honors it.

I have tremendous appreciation for the teachers, practitioners and ancient wisdom traditions that carried these practices forward and allowed generations after them to experience their power.

But yoga has never been static.

It has traveled through cultures, teachers, languages and generations. Practices have been interpreted, organized, expanded and re-understood as human consciousness and our understanding of ourselves have evolved.

For me, Quundalini is part of that continuing evolution.

It keeps the powerful tools I have experienced through Kundalini practice—breath, rhythmic movement, mantra, mudra, meditation, sound, subtle-body awareness and deep self-inquiry—and brings them into relationship with trauma-informed healing, nervous-system awareness, astrology, Sacred Feminine wisdom, masculine and feminine energetics, and what I call Quantum Healing Yoga.

The Q is intentional.

It points us toward the quantum - toward the smallest and most subtle layers at which change begins. I use quantum as a language for looking beneath what is immediately visible.

For example: Beneath the behavior is a belief. Beneath the belief may be a pattern. Beneath the pattern may be a protective response. Beneath the protective response may be an experience. And beneath all of that is something even deeper: awareness itself.

This is where Quundalini wants to go. Not simply, How do I change what I am doing?

But: What is moving beneath what I am doing? What is true beneath the conditioning? What belongs to me, and what have I inherited or learned? What happens when I become quiet enough to feel the more subtle currents within myself?

Because ultimately, Kundalini, Kundalini Yoga and Quundalini all lead me back to the same pursuit: SEEKING TRUTH.

Truth Seeking work is between you and you.

One of the most important aspects of Jai Quundalini is that there is no external identity you have to take on in order to practice it.

You do not have to look spiritual. You do not have to dress a particular way. You do not have to wear white or cover your head. You don't have to adopt someone else's language, personality or idea of what awakening should look like.

You just have to show up. Come as you are.

The practice is not about becoming more like the teacher. It is about becoming more deeply acquainted with yourself. The teacher can offer a container. The practice can create a current. But eventually there has to be communion between you and the intelligence within you. That is where the work becomes yours.

And that is also why Jai Quundalini is more than what we typically think of as a yoga class.

There is movement, certainly. But there is also meditation. There is inquiry. There is listening. There is breath. There is sound. There is silence.

There is relationship with the nervous system and with the subtle body.

There is exploration of the masculine and feminine currents within us - the part that structures and the part that flows, the part that acts and the part that receives, the part that directs and the part that listens.

There is relationship with the larger rhythms around us as well. Astrology becomes one way of observing those cosmic rhythms and asking how those same archetypal energies may be moving within us.

Again and again, the outer becomes a mirror for the inner. As above, so below. As within, so without.

From Kundalini to Quundalini

So perhaps the simplest distinction is this:

Kundalini is the force.

Kundalini Yoga is a practice for cultivating relationship with that force.

Jai Quundalini™ is the way I have brought those practices forward into a contemporary system rooted in ancient wisdom while making room for the body, the nervous system, the Sacred Feminine, the cosmos, our lived experience and our own inner authority.

Underneath all three is the same invitation: To become more conscious of the life moving through you. To remove some of what obstructs your relationship with it. To listen more deeply. To question what you have been told. To seek what is true beneath conditioning and limitation.

And perhaps, ultimately, to discover that what you have been seeking was never somewhere outside of you. It was waiting to be awakened within.

At Jai, there are three words that embody this work: I ACTIVATE ME.  The power to awaken lies within you.
